I like the Darkstone chests as well, and Elonian keys are great for me. My advice is if you are doing ascension missions bring 3 keys at least. I usually run into 2-3 chests during each of those missions and I got a Superior Vigor rune out of one. In my experience the elonian keys tend to give spellcaster weapons, the last one I got was a Holy Rod max dmg req8 Divine Favor Improves Skill recharge on Healing Prayers 20% Energy +5 while health > 50%. I also picked up an air staff that had Max dmg req 7 air; Max Armor mod; max energy mod; improves casting speed 10%
From Shiverpeaks chests I have picked up 2 gold fellblades (both of which had high requirements 10 and 13 and no built in damage mod) and a Superior Abs. Rune. I havent had that much luck on chests in FOW or UW yet. |

I'd say this thread is pretty much done.
To sum up: 1) Odds of giving you a good gold drop are fairly low, but it does happen. 2) On the other hand, a fellblade 15>50.... superior absorptions... set of 15%dmg bows... yum. |

I liked having the random chests before, but I've definitely gotten better items since the key system was implemented, and I KNOW that what drops will be mine. I get key drops fairly frequently, (no, they don't just drop from bosses, someone asked) and if I have more than three Elonian or Shiverpeak Keys, I give them out to guildies that don't have one if we come across a chest. I tend to only buy Shiverpeak, Elonian and Obsidian Keys if they haven't dropped in a while and I don't have one on me.
I've gotten fairly crappy purple items from Obsidian chests in FoW... crappy considering that I paid 1.5K for a key. I have a key for UW that dropped my first time there, but have yet to come across a chest. To me it's a gamble, and one that I'm willing to make when I can spare the gold. I AM saving for Fissure Armor, but not doing fun little things like taking a chance with keys makes the game a grind to me. I usually end up giving my chest drops to guildies that have newbie characters, or salvage them for parts. I get annoyed when I get 2 Steel Ingots, instead of the Zealous Haft or whatever, but again, it's chance. The Elonian Chest that gave out two Major Beast Mastery Runes in a row on a mission can bite me though. The other guy who got the same thing I did just dropped his there and walked away. I love finding purple and gold items and IDing them to see what I got. It's like a little surprise that I look forward to. Chest items have the same thrill, even if it's not such a great item. |

That said, I've had a lot of good items out of chests (no idea if my ROI is good, I really don't care) and last night a guild mate got a superior absorption rune out of a chest in SF. |

Save your 300 gp for that dwarven ale...
Yeah....
Southern shiverpeak keys... Near the Port Sledge areas, aren't worth their price. Most of the items that come out of those chests, are rare purples....ranging anywhere from 100-250 gp *From what I've seen* In the end...if you decide to sell the *godly* purple item...you'll be ending up poorer than you already are. Haha. Twisted humour. -_- ....Just a word of caution for any treasure hunters... Stick to SF...UW, and FoW |

addicted to keys
I'm addicted to keys and chests .
I always buy 2-3 miners keys and 1-2 shiverpeak keys before going into SF farming. I keep this supply of keys up at all times. It's just the curiosity for what will it get me this time. The kick if its something cool. The great randomness of gold items. When u fight a boss u can expect what green u get ( if u get one ), when opening a chest u can get about every single item possible. I prefer gold items above greens, having a good gold makes is far more original, not 1000 other people carrying the same uber green as you. Golds can have far more effects. And i EASILY get the costs for my keys back. I find an uber upgrade about every 10-20 keys ( gotten 3 max insightfull staffhead so far, they sell for about 15-25k wich gets u at least 20 other miners keys. ) fair deal if u ask me. and then i havent included the other things u get from the other 19 keys. Sure i get crappy purples sometimes but hey, its only 750g. I usually make at least 1.5k each run. And i just collect golds for my lower lvl other characters. gotten a perfect fiery dragon sword from a shiverpeak chest yesterday, still have to buy a good pommel for it ( may be hard, not the richest around ;p. only 20k total ) but i immediatly changed my warrior to swordsmanship . That's another advantage of golds over greens, they make u change ur characters in order to make use of the weapon and thus u will discover a whole new playing style . So for me keys are the greatest thing around , i dont even farm for greens, i farm for chests! |

I found 2 +7ar sword pomels (salvaged) farming yesterday plus a few other near max mods. Next time I go to FoW or UW ill buy some keys and apply these to any good sword I find to increase the chance of actualy having a max wep

K i spent possibly over 40 to 50K on keys. All kinds,
from shiverpeaks keys to Obsidian keys since the update that made the key/chest thing into effect. results: - dozens and dozens of useless things - a gold perfect fellblade from a shiverpeaks chest near citadel - a gold perfect Stormbow from a phantom chest near the tons of Obsidian Burrowers (i think thats what they're called) in UW - 2 gold ghost staff, one perfect for water with 57 HP and another that was not so good for domination. Both staff where also found in UW at different occasions - 1 gold shield with 37 hp and +1 to earth skills at 20% (my warrior now uses earth so it just happen to be perfect) found near amber light camp. now sure its not many items that are great, but..... hell, the fellblade alone paid back for all the keys, lol sure its rare to get things, but eventualy after a while you will get them, and when you do, they will be worth a lot. EDIT: i forgot one: a gold cane with +4 energy when HP > 50% and some other mods on it, also perfect for me to use with my mesmer. Last edited by Master Oria; Nov 08, 2005 at 12:15 PM // 12:15.. |

I love keys because:
1) There's nothing else to spend money on. 2) They're a great gold sink. |

I always carry about 3 keys of each kind. But I only open chests if a team member got something gold of it. The same chest always drops purple or gold in one run. If someone gets gold you will, too.

I love keys as well, here is my score
I picked up a Superior absorption rune from a shiverpeaks chest Superior Vigor from a Crystal desert mission 2 Gold fellblades 1 Gold max dmg Sephis axe from a Darkstone chest 2 perfect staffs Both had perfect energy mods and 20% chance mods that were GOOD 2 perfect holy rods one was a +20% recharge for healing prayers, the other was a 10% recharge for anything. Ive heard that this is the only way to get certain items, and as far as I know its the only way to get max dmg gold sephis axes, crystaline swords, and other very very rare items. I always take 3 keys of the area I am going to be in and I usually play with guild members and have the most gold available, so I open the chests first and let them know if its safe to open or not. |

In my experience-if you have the proper keys in bag ect,you never run into chests. When you're not packing keys--chests are all over the place.Very frustrating. My best chest yeilds have come from Darkstone chests.

Well, i like them but hate them at the same time. I mean i never have a key when they pop up, and when i do i only get purple drops that no one would ever buy, and i have no use for them, so they end up getting sold for 100-350 gp to those merchants when the keys themelves cost 700 gp or so lol.

If u use enough keys they will be profitable in the long run. Example: I just recently went though about 6 obsidian keys on a chest, and it gave only purple drops. On the last key, wouldn't you know it, I got a godly chaos axe. Sundering 10/9 of fortitude +29, max damage, req.9, +19%dmage while hexed. It profited.

im pretty sure it's the other way around. while in the short term you may get lucky and make a profit, in the long run, the more keys you buy, the more your losses will be. it's like playing the lottery, except with a really small possible winning.

I don't like keys. When I get a key that drops for me, I usually sell it to the merchant. This is because I already have godly, in many cases green, items for all my players (except my mule). I'm also lazy and don't like selling to other players...
